What is a Physical Gold IRA?

A Gold IRA is technically a Self-Directed Individual Retirement Account (SDIRA) that holds IRS-approved physical bullion bars or coins rather than conventional paper assets like stocks, mutual funds, or exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 408(m), precious metals held inside a retirement account must meet strict purity standards:

  • Gold: Minimum 99.5% purity (.995 fineness) — e.g., American Gold Buffalo, Canadian Maple Leaf, Australian Kangaroo. (American Gold Eagle coins are an IRS statutory exception at 91.67% purity).
  • Silver: Minimum 99.9% purity (.999 fineness) — e.g., American Silver Eagle, Austrian Philharmonic.
  • Platinum & Palladium: Minimum 99.95% purity (.9995 fineness).

The 4 Real Costs of Owning a Gold IRA

Unlike conventional brokerage accounts where index fund trading is largely commission-free, physical precious metals IRAs involve physical custody, logistics, and insurance. The key fee components include:

Fee CategoryIndustry BenchmarkEditorial Due Diligence
One-Time Setup Fee[VERIFY: $50 – $100 typical across custodians]Charged by the non-bank trust company custodian to establish the self-directed account.
Annual Custodian Maintenance[VERIFY: $75 – $300 flat annual fee]Covers IRS tax reporting (Form 5498, Form 1099-R) and account administration. Flat fees are strongly preferred over scaled percentages.
Annual Depository Storage[VERIFY: $100 – $250 flat annual fee]Paid to an IRS-approved insured vaulting facility (e.g., Delaware Depository, Brink’s, Texas Precious Metals Depository).
Dealer Spread Markup[VERIFY: 2% – 5% on bullion; up to 30%+ on proof coins]The gap between what you pay for coins and their prevailing spot/melt value. This is where deceptive dealers make their largest profits.

Rollover Mechanics: Direct Transfer vs. 60-Day Rollover

Funding a Gold IRA is typically accomplished by rolling over funds from an existing 401(k), 403(b), TSP, or Traditional IRA. There are two distinct methods to execute this:

Method A: Direct Trustee-to-Trustee Transfer (Recommended)

Funds move directly from your current custodian to the new self-directed custodian via check or wire. You never touch the money, no taxes are withheld, and there is no 60-day deadline or tax reporting risk.

Method B: 60-Day Indirect Rollover (High Risk)

Your existing custodian cuts a check directly to you. You have exactly 60 calendar days to deposit the entire amount into the new Gold IRA. If you miss the window by even one day, the IRS treats the full sum as an early taxable distribution plus a 10% penalty if you are under age 59½.
